  1. TIm, I have never known you to be cranky. And I don’t see you as an old man. Most always, I agree with you—but I have to add Elvis, Over the Rhine, and Birds of Chicago to my list of essential musicians. And not sure I can listen to Eric Clapton without thoughts of his rants ruining the guitar work. I also want to mention how much I appreciate your stove story. It brought back a memory. Back in the dark ages when our first son was but a babe, my folks came for a visit. As you may recall, my Dad was an electrician and also had a knack for fixing things. Almost anything. So, instead of coo-ing at his first grandchild, Dad went around our house and checked on anything that didn’t work right and then fixed it. Our stove at the time worked only partially—maybe two burners and the oven were kaput? Something like that. But we were young and did not have a lot of extra cash so didn’t worry about it. Dad proceeded to replace nearly every part in the stove. But it still didn’t work. So he checked our house’s wiring. That also was a problem. He proceeded to re-wire the house. Dad could be a cranky old man at times but he was never one to just sit idle.

    1. Thanks for the kind words Dorothy, and I laughed at the story about your Dad. I remember your Mom and Dad very well; they were always incredibly nice to me. And your Mom was very supportive of my writing. More supportive than my mom… my mom’s exact quote as a teenager when I told her that I wanted to write for the Post: “stay in the grocery business, people have to eat!” She was probably right!

I’ve attached a poor copy of a column she wrote years ago. I’m going to make a copy for myself and drop it in the mail to you.

I think writing runs in our family, while pulling out this column from your mom, I came across my Dad’s life story that he wrote a few years ago. I’ll send it you in the next couple days.

      Fascinatng reading… for us anyway.

Thanks for reading the blog. I’m having fun with it. Up to 100 followers, aiming for 1000.

      Tim

  2. Another fine installment. The 2 party system is broken beyond repair. Thanks for calling out both sides, though I do think the party of Lincoln has really come completely off the rails. And nice looking stove. Glad you got it working!

  3. Spot on!! Love this. We need to get rid of the 2 party system. It is so broken and corrupt!
Love all music except not a huge fan of country. I do like Hank and some of the older stuff.
I will comment about the young people because I don’t fully agree with your opinion about them always being on tik tok etc.. Although I know you meant it just as an observation and not for all youth. Here is a positive about them for you….. I was at a concert last night with one of my daughters, her friend and her mom. I was extremely impressed with the crowd and the respect they had. They were all a lot more kinder and aware than many of the adults these days. Also, guess what? They wore masks and didn’t bitch about it. We saw Hippo Campus. They were jamming and had so much energy. I will add that it was good for the soul to see so many people laughing, dancing and having fun. These same young people have had a lot thrown at them recently as well. I can’t imagine the peer pressure on social media, texting and instant news being thrown at them at such a young age. It is a lot for anyone, but for people with developing minds it is too much extra. Love reading your blog! Good stuff
