You’re absolutely right. Think about it. A quality start means a pitcher with a 4.50 earned run average is considered good. Really? I thought the typical measure of a good pitcher was one with an ERA of 3.00 or less. The more we as a society get used to accepting lesser quality the more likely we’re going to get even less quality until we finally end up with no quality at all.
It’s interesting that it probably took about 25 years for the negative aspects of the “quality start “ to permeate and almost ruin baseball. The “quality start” mentality that we’re experiencing today will have even more serious ramifications in another 25 years if not sooner based on your examples.
Good column. Bob Gibson’s interviewing a pitcher after the pitcher lost a 1-0 game in ten innings. “Well John, sometimes you just have to pitch a shut out, you didn’t do enough today, did you?” He didn’t last long as an interviewer …
Or after McCarver came to the mound to talk to Gibson about pitching strategy… get back behind the plate, the only thing you know about pitching is that you can’t hit it.”

The thought of Popeyes running out of chicken brought me to my knees.
You are always entertaining and insightful, Tim, but some things are just too personally hurtful. Please, no more about Popeyes.

You motivated me to “do better” after your comments on I’m Mad at the King.” I guess negative feedback works.
